The popularity of the Pinellas Trail has soared since the pandemic -- and so have the complaints about some users of the trail. On Sat April 6, police from Belleair, Clearwater, Largo, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will be on the trail and at key roadway crossings to ensure motorist and trail users are complying with traffic laws.
The Pinellas Trail, which runs 45 miles from downtown St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs, receives over two million users a year.
A Spring 2023 survey of Pinellas Trail users showed E-Bikes as a growing segment of users — and of concern among other trail users in comments about perceived safety of the trail.
E-Bikes topped the list of "don‘t feel safe" concerns for both walkers/joggers who said they didn’t feel safe (44% of comments) and among bike/E-Bikers (37%).
Lack of courtesy was mentioned ("share the path" etiquette) was twice as high among those who don‘t typically bike (16% vs 9%)
10% of the comments cited "fear/harassment" as a concern.
Forward Pinellas, Pinellas County, Friends of the Pinellas Trail, and the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) will be in downtown Dunedin and downtown St. Petersburg On April 6 distributing safety materials and safety devices.

The 70 mile ride will follow the 35 milers for the first half. After Manasota Key the ride will head east through horse farm country. There will be a rest stop along the Myakka River. From there we head west again and will pick up The Legacy Trail. We will ride the trail up to the next rest stop sponsored by The Friends of The Legacy Trail and then to Casey Key, more riding along the beach, ending at Sharky’s for lunch.
The 35 mile ride will take you over the Intercoastal waterway to the neighborhood streets of south Venice. You will cross the intercoastal waterway again, and have your first rest stop. Now ride down beautiful Manasota Key. In some places you will be so close to the beach, you have to watch for sand in the road with many beautiful vistas of the Gulf! After returning on the key you will hit the rest stop again and head back to Venice, this time using the Venetian Waterway Trail part of the way.
The 15 mile ride stays on the island of Venice. There is an optional extra 4 miles that goes off the island, on the Venetian Waterway Trail (to Shamrock Park as the turn around point). This ride is suitable for most anybody with a bike. You will ride to Casperson Beach to access the Venetian Waterway trail. After riding the trail to the north side of Venice you will ride low traffic roads to the Venice Yacht Club for your rest stop. From there you will meander through residential side streets back to Sharky’s.
